Kitchen Painting

Why Paint your Kitchen

So why would you want to have your kitchen painted? Well, it will revitalise your existing units at a fraction of the price of a new kitchen, or even new doors, and maybe leave enough in your budget for new handles, worktops or tiling. You have can choose any colour from the ranges we use, you're not therefore limited to the few colours offered with a new off the shelf kitchen. The most common comment from our customers is that it is ‘just like a new kitchen’, so why go to the extra expense!? We use Chalk Paint™ and Farrow & Ball. Email us for more information on other ranges we use or see our portfolio.

We try to keep our painting method simple and efficient. The surfaces need to be clean and dry and free from grease but there is normally no need to sand.  We start with a tried and trusted stain sealing primer. It has great 'stickability', meaning it will adhere to most surfaces and create a solid base for the paint. We then apply two coats of paint and, in the case of Chalk Paint™,  two coats of satin wax finish acrylic varnish (this step is not required for other ranges), and we're done. OK, it's not quite that easy, but that's the main highlights!

At Thomas & Lucia we offer a professional kitchen painting service which, by the way, can also include tables, chairs and other free standing items such as smaller dressers and sideboards.

How it Works

We discuss your initial ideas by phone, message or via email.  If you provide a few photos of the units to be painted we can provide a free no obligation ball-park estimate so you can see if it is within your budget. If you’d then like a formal estimate Matthew will discuss your requirements in more detail and, if required, arrange to come and see you to have a look at the kitchen. He will then produce a written Commission Statement that will clearly state what has been agreed, exact prices and expected timescales.

Once the deposit has been paid we will schedule a start date for the work. Depending on the size of the kitchen it will take 2-3 weeks to complete.

We remove all the doors, drawer fronts and free standing items and paint them in our workshop in Sway. Items that can’t be removed will be painted on site at a mutually agreed date. An important fact is that our method means that the kitchen remains usable throughout. You do not even need to empty the cupboards or drawers.  Finally, we return and refit the doors and drawers and reattach handles.

We use a professional spraying system on the doors and drawers that are painted in the workshop while the static items such as end panels, cornice and other fixed items are hand painted on site.

Note: Our painting service is currently limited to within approximately 50 miles/1 hours journey of Christchurch, Dorset (BH23)

Cost

What we don’t do is pull a guess out of thin air, however educated it might be. Instead we have developed an estimating tool into which we input the types and number of things to paint like, base cabinet door 300mm or wall cabinet door 500mm, and it will work out a price and how much paint will be needed. So, unsurprisingly, the cost is directly related to the size of the kitchen. It’s just that we’re getting quite good at estimating and our pricing is consistent and the same for everybody. This detailed approach to estimating is much fairer than those that just are based on a price-per-door which, for example, does not differentiate between the huge doors on the fridge freezer and the small wall cabinet doors.

It was quite by chance that I discovered that Thomas & Lucia paint kitchens using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint™. And it was a very serendipitous event when I did. Matthew came out gave a quote and an accurate time scale of the time it would take along with the process. As we were having new floors, sinks and ovens and an island it was not a straightforward project, however the whole project was managed very smoothly and I am absolutely delighted with my new economically transformed kitchen.
